Dangerously Delicious Pies was started in the spring of 1999 by Rodney Henry. Baking pies in the kitchen of a dive bar called Friends in the Fells Point neighborhood of Baltimore, MD. It was born out of desperation. Rodney was a Rocker. touring with his band the Glenmont Popes, he would return from long tours with little to no money in his pocket and needed a way to sustain himself during the few weeks down time between tours. Having been obsessed with pie most of his life, it seemed natural to bake some pies and see if they could be sold to some of the bar patrons.   ...cont'd below...

The first pies were baked for women in hopes that a fresh baked pie would make a great impression and lead to a chance date. The women always were stoked to receive the pie and thought it was very cute. Many dates followed as well as word that this guy was more than just a Rocker, He could make a great pie. As time went on several Baltimore Coffee shops would carry the pies while Rodney was in town.

Prior to a major cross country tour with his buddies, the Drive-By Truckers, Rodney baked 60 pecan pies, wrapped em' up tight and loaded them into his tour van along with dry goods, shortening, rolling pins, Pie pans and the basics to be able to produce pies on the road. Always having pecan on hand. The idea was to bake fresh fruit pies along the road with fresh produce from whatever part of the country they'd be in. It worked out famously. The accommodations for both outfits started to get better due to the fact Rodney would find homes with good kitchens and perhaps a guest room and a couple extra couches for the bands to stay. A lot of the nights the homeowners would assist in the pie baking process as most of band members would be drinking beer and just killing time before the show. These were high times and a lightbulb moment. Rodney had thought that maybe this could be a straight legit business. Pie-n-Rock-n-Roll ! Yes. Pie could be the ticket for his Rock and Roll dreams.

Fast forward to the winter of 2003. A Thrift Bakery had gone up for lease a few blocks east of Friends where Rodney had been living in a tiny apartment above the bar. It was meant to happen. The day it went for lease he had stumbled past and noticed the sign going up in the window. This was in Patterson Park and at the time a rough part of town. Well the price was right and Dangerously Delicious was in business. Drug dealers and Hookers were his first customers. It wasn't unheard of to have a lady of the night be the first person to enter the shop at 6 in the morning for a slice and cup of coffee after a long nights work. He made no judgments, he was happy for the patronage and the conversation.

That was 15 years ago and now Dangerously Delicious Pies has three locations between Baltimore and DC. Dangerously Delicious serves top notch Sweet Pie, Savory Pie and Quiche and is constantly pushing the bar in quality pie. Don't be fooled, this pie is some of the most satisfying food you can get into your belly. Do It.
